A milking machine has a vessel to receive the milk which can either be connected to or shut off from a vacuum source. This facility is provided by a fitting which connects the flexible pipe from the cow's udder to the vessel receiving the milk. The fitting has a ball (21) made of glass or stainless steel which can roll in a guide channel (22) which has a hold (24) in one wall. When the ball is over the hole (24) the vessel is shut off from the vacuum source, when the ball is clear of the hole (24) the vessel is connected to the vacuum source. The position of the ball (21) can be controlled by varying the angular position of the fitting. USE - Milking machines.
