PURPOSE:To make it possible to transfer an image having high density, excellent uniformity and excellent rubbing resistance, by incorporating a water-soluble resin in an amount larger than that of a surfactant in a thermally transferable ink layer proximate to the surface of a base, and incorporating a surfactant in an amount larger than that of a water-soluble rosin in a layer proximate to a surface to be opposed to a transfer recording paper. CONSTITUTION:In producing a thermal transfer recording medium, transfer layer-forming components are divided into at least two kinds of coating liquids such as a first transfer layer-forming coating liquid and a second transfer layer-forming coating liquid, or the components for forming a single layer are mixed with water or a solvent which does not dissolve the components, followed by dispersing so that the components have an average particle diameter of not more than 10 mum, and the at least two coating liquids or the dispersed liquid is applied to a base so that the total coating weight of solids is 1-10 g/m<2>, followed by drying at a temperature not higher than the melting point of the layer or layer thus formed. In this case, the weight ratio of a surfactant to a water-soluble resin in the resultant thermally transferable ink layer in the vicinity of the surface of the base is not more than 9/10, preferably, not more than 1/5, whereas the weight ratio of a water-soluble resin to a surfactant in the ink layer in the vicinity of a surface to be opposed to a transfer recording paper is not more than 9/10, preferably, not more than 8/10. |
