PURPOSE:To economically form a pattern on the surface of a metal product such as stationery by forming an electrically insulating film on the surface of the product, carving the desired pattern in the film and the metal base and forming a layer on the pattern by surface treatment. CONSTITUTION:The surface of the metal base 1 of a metal product such as Al stationery is coated by electrodeposition or oxidized to form an electrically insulating film 4. A beltlike groove 3a and notches 3b are carved in the film 4 and the metal base 1 with an edged tool or the like to patternwise exposed the surface of the metal base 1. The patternwise exposed part 3 is plated, coated by electrodeposition or anodically oxidized to form an ornamental film pattern 5. When the pattern is formed by plating with a noble metal such as gold, the plating cost is reduced because only the necessary part 3 is plated.
