The invention relates to a flame arrester 1 located in a compressed air pipe 3 of a diesel engine employing compression starting, the flame arrester comprising a perforated obstruction situated in the flow path and connected to the compressed air pipe to the cylinder. According to the invention the said obstruction in the flame arrester has been made as a separate piece 1, which is located in connection with the bottom end of the compressed air pipe 3 leading to the cylinder at the point of connection thereof to the common compressed air manifold. <IMAGE>
