Digital data received at asynchronous rates on input channels (10a to 10n) is multiplexed and transmitted by way of synchronous channels (150) together with encoded information of the original respective asynchronous rate. Data received form the synchronous channels is demultiplexed and clocked out on a respective output channel (182a - 182n) at a rate which is reconstituted from the encoded rate information for the respective data.
