PURPOSE:To eliminate read error due to the deviation of position of a tape, by enabling a relative distance on the tape between a read head and a data track to be corrected even at a part other than the start end of the tape. CONSTITUTION:When an error detection circuit 13 detects an error in a reproducing signal from the read head 11 and a dropout detection circuit 14 detects dropout, a head positioning control circuit 5 operates a head position adjusting servo circuit 6 so as to move the position of the read head 11 by (l). Also, when the error detection circuit 13 detects no error at the time of reproduction in a retry operation and the dropout detection circuit 14 detects no dropout, the read head travel distance (l) is stored in a head travel distance storage circuit 16. A head position adjusting circuit counter circuit 15 counts the number of times of adjustment from the reference position of the read head, and calculates the mean value lTVP of the read head travel distances l1-lN by using a head position travel distance averaging circuit 17 when the number of times arrives at a regulated value N, and the reference position of the read head 11 is corrected by lTVP hereafter.
