PURPOSE:To facilitate production of bubble-free optical fiber of reduced loss, by heating a glass tube including a glass rod as a core, as the space between the tube and the rod is filled with a specific gas, and melt-drawing the resulting solid parent material into fiber. CONSTITUTION:A glass rod 1 is inserted into a glass tube 2 and they are heated with burner 3 from the outer surface of the tube 2, as the space in the tube is filled with a gas having a large diffusion rate in glass such as helium, to fuse the end of the tube 2 and close the space by collapsing. Then, the burner is traversed, as the tube 2 and the rod 1 are rotated, to collapse the space in order from the closed end until a solid rod as a parent material for optical fiber is prepared. The material is melt-drawn to form optical fiber.
