A load torque detector is located between the drive unit and the tool or workpiece which are moved towards or away from each other by a linear drive out. A main start switch initiates a cutting operation on the workpiece when a variation in a load torque within a given period sensed by the detector has decreased down to a present limit. The operating direction of the linear drive unit is reversed to interrupt the cutting operation if a difference between a load torque after the start of the linear drive unit and a load torque, after the decrease of the variation to the present limit and before the initiation of the cutting operation, has exceeded a second preset limit. |
