PURPOSE:To obtain a filter element which enables complete removal of cake layers without leaving any residual cake layers, thereby preventing the growth of clogged layers merely by backblowing, by forming the filter element into a special shape. CONSTITUTION:A filter element 3 has a polygonal cross section each side of which comprises a inwardly depressed circular-arc 4. Raw liquid fed from a raw liquid feed port 9 is filtered through a filter cloth 13 wrapped around the filter element 3. To remove cakes, the filter cloth 13 is largely inflated by blowing compressed air or filtered liquids from the inside of the filter element 3 so that the cakes are removed completely, while the pores of the filter cloth 13 are expanded by backblowing to prevent the growth of clogged layers of scales thereon.
