PURPOSE:To shorten an average access time to a file even when a large capacity of a buffer memory is not prepared as for a directory by storing at least either of the directory classified by a member into a buffer memory and retrieving the directory on the buffer memory. CONSTITUTION:A file stored into a large capacity of a random access memory device is classified into plural members, a directory classified by a member to show the storing position of respective records to belong to it for respective members is prepared, and stored into the memory device. When the access request of a certain record is executed, it is investigated whether or not the directory of the member to belong to it is read and stored by a buffer memory from the memory device. When the request is not executed, the said directory classified by the member is read from the memory device, next, the storing position of the said records is investigated from the directory classified by the member on the buffer memory and accessed to the said records. Thus, since the record storing position can be investigated at once, the access time can be shortened.
