PURPOSE:To improve the protective film on a thin magnetic metallic film medium and to obtain a magnetic recording medium having high mechanical reliability over a long period of time by forming a thin carbon film on the thin magnetic metallic film and medium and further, forming a thin polyimide film thereon, then coating the surface with an org. compd. having >=8C and polar group. CONSTITUTION:The thin magnetic metallic film medium is coated on a substrate and the thin carbon film is coated thereon; further, the thin polyimide film is formed thereon and thereafter, the org. compd. having >=8C and the polar group is coated on said film. A film consisting of at least one kind of material selected from Cr, Ti, Ta, Zr, and Nd is formed between the thin magnetic metallic film medium and the thin carbon film. The Cr, Ti, Ta, Zr, and Nd is formed between the thin magnetic metallic film medium and the thin carbon film. The Cr, Ti, Ta, Zr, and Nd additionally improve the adhesiveness of the thin magnetic metallic film medium and the thin carbon film and the film thickness of 20-200Angstrom suffices.
