PURPOSE:To produce the title substance which is used as perfumes and agrochemicals, by reaction of 3,7,11-trimethyl-3-halogeno-1,6,10-dodecatriene with an organic tertiary amine in high selectivity and yield with side reactions suppressed. CONSTITUTION:The reaction of 3,7,11-trimethyl-3-halogeno-1,6,10-dodecatriene or 3,7,11-trimethyl-1-halogeno-2,6,10-dodecatriene or a mixture thereof with a tertiary organic amine such as triethylamine, pyridine, 1,8- diazabicyclo-[5,4,0]undecene-7 is conducted in the presence or in the absence of a solvent at 50-150 deg.C to give a farnesene. The process according to the present invention can inhibit the formation of by-products such as bisabolen, allofarnesene or gamma-curcumene.
