PURPOSE:To faciliate the fine adjustment of a combustion rate and improve the safety of combustion by providing a rack and pinions which constitute a fine adjustment mechanism for raising and lowering a wick and providing a taper portion on a meshing part of the pinions, which engages the rack. CONSTITUTION:A wick 3 capable of being freely moved up and down, a wick raising and lowering lever 6 which brings the wick into an up-and-down motion, a vibration-proof flame extinguishing mechanism 16 which restores the wick raising and lowering lever to its former state due to vibrations of earthquake or the like and extinguishes flames, and a fine adjustment mechanism 20 for raising and lowering the wick, which drives step-by-step the wick raising and lowering lever 6, are provided. The fine adjustment mechanism 20 for raising and lowering the wick has a rack 23 provided integrally with the wick raising and lowering lever 6 and also has pinions 32, 34 disposed in a contactless position with respect to the rack on the moving path of the rack 23, while the pinions are provided detachably and rotatably with respect to the rack and are also provided with a taper portion 34a on a meshing part of the pinions which engages the rack 23, thus the fine adjustment mechanism 20 is so constituted that the rack 23 is slidingly moved by the return of the wick raising and lowering lever 6 due to the operation of the vibration-proof flame extinguishing mechanism 16. When the vibration-proof flame extinguishing mechanism is operated during the fine adjustment, the rack 23 on the wick raising and lowering mechanism side will move slidingly on the pinions on the side of the fine adjustment mechanism for raising and lowering the wick to be brought surely into a flame-extinguishing state.
