PURPOSE:To enable the high speed printing and reduction of cost and to improve the printing quality of the title printer by using a ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal for a liquid crystal light valve, and by forming the window shape of a shutter in such way that the length of said shape in a sub-scanning direction makes shorter than that in a main scanning direction. CONSTITUTION:The window shape of the shutter of the liquid crystal light valve using the ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal is formed in such way that the length of said shape in the sub-scanning direction is shorter than that in the main scanning direction. Namely, the liquid crystal panel is constituted of the microshutter group 203 penetrating or shielding a light and a photomask 201 shielding an ordinary light. Each shutter windows of the microshutter group 203 have the length in the sub-scanning direction shorter than that in the main scanning direction. Thus, the high speed printing and reduction of cost are permitted and the printing quality of the title printer is improved.
