PURPOSE:To easily make mechanical adjustment at hand by providing a rotary encoder with a display means which synchronizes with a one-pulse Z-phase signal outputted by one turn of an input shaft. CONSTITUTION:The encoder is provided with a light emitting element 14 which synchronizes with the Z-phase output and a switch 15 for operating and stopping the light emitting element. A load is connected between a positive potential terminal 20 and a Z-phase output terminal 19 and when the input shaft rotates and the Z-phase signal output pin 18a of an arithmetic process 18 turns on while the switch 15 is closed, an ignition state is entered between the collector and emitter of an output transistor Tr1, the Z-phase output terminal 19 is grounded, and the light emitting element 14 emits light while a load operates. When the input shaft further rotates and the Z-phase signal output pin 18a turns off, a nonignition state is entered between the collector and emitter of the output Tr1, and then while the light emission of the light emitting element 14 is stopped, the load also stops.
