<p>A carbon coupling-nipple, a portion of which fits closely into the socket of electrodes which are to be joined, has at least one carbon rod inserted transversely in each portion of the nipple. The axial coefficient of thermal expansion of the rods is substantially higher than the transverse coefficient of the nipple and this may be achieved with rods which extend entirely or partially through the nipple or with rods with a baked segment in the middle and graphitized segments at the ends.
