A shaft 14 of a warp knitting machine drives the knitting tools through two chains of links of which one chain has four pivot points 14, 16, 18, 20 and the other chain has at least four pivot points, e.g. 14, 16, 22, 24, or 14, 36, 26, 20, or 14, 36, 28, 26, 41, the first link of each chain being a crank 15 or 35 fast on the shaft and the final link being a lever 19, 23 (a bellcrank), 38, or 40 rockable about a fixed point 20, 24, or 41, the linkages operating common driven members and transmitting each a different component of motion to the knitting tools.
