PURPOSE:To find the floating quantity of a floating head slider by storing previously the relation between the floating quantity of the floating head slider and a hue theta and comparing it with a calculated hue. CONSTITUTION:A light source 5 irradiates dummy magnetic disk 2 and the floating head slider 10. Reflected light beams from the disk 2 and light beams reflected by the floating surface of the head slider 10 after being transmitted have their axes aligned with each other to generate interference light beam. It interference color image is guided to a TV camera 7 by a beam splitter 6 interposed between the disk 2 and light source 5. The RGB signal of the interference color image photodetected by the camera 7 is inputted to an image memory 9 through an A/D converter 8. A computer 11 finds the hue theta from the RGB signal value. This relation between the floating quantity is and the value of the hue theta is found previously and stored in a data memory 13, and a comparator 12 compares it with the actually detected hue theta to find the actual floating quantity of the floating head slider 10.
