PURPOSE:To optically detect the falling state of splashes so that the cutting state of an ingot is decided and a continuous casting operation is speeded up by measuring the lower part in the cutting part of the ingot photometrically by means of light energy sensors. CONSTITUTION:A carriage 5 begins to advance toward the down stream side in synchronization with the movement of the ingot 1 when the part intended to be out of the ingot 1 arrives at the position right under the traversing line of torches 71, 72. The torches 71, 72 and the light energy sensors 91, 92 start moving simultaneously toward the inside and stop at both end parts of the ingot 1. Preheating gases are ejected from the torches 71, 72 to preheat both side ends of the ingot 1. Cutting gases are ejected from the torches 71, 72 upon ending of the preheating for the prescribed period of time and the torches 71, 72 as well as the light energy sensors 91, 92 begin to move again toward the inside. The lower part of the cutting part is successively measured by the sensors 91, 92 and the outputs thereof are sent to a deciding device 11. The deciding device 11 decides whether the cutting is defective or non-defective and feeds the signal thereof to a controller 9 and outputs the signal further to a driving motor 8 to instruct the end of the cutting or the recutting.
