PURPOSE:To set an output signal and original density to a linear relation by converting picture information at every color outputted from a read means into corrected values in correspondence with reference data, outputting them and outputting the corrected values in proportion to the density of an original picture. CONSTITUTION:A white reference pattern which has been provided beyond an original picture scanning area is previously read as reference data SH- DATA0-5 before the original picture is scanned. Picture information of respective colors, which are outputted from the read means 212R, 212G and 212B are converted into the corrected values in correspondence with the reference data SH-DATA0-5, and the conversion is executed so that the corrected values in proportion to the density of the original picture are outputted. Thus, data which have been read from the reference white pattern are set as reference data SH-DATA0-5, and picture data which have been color-resolved at every scanning line at the time or original scanning are operated at every color, whereby shading correction and the characteristic of signal outputs are simultaneously be corrected. Thus, the signal outputs and the density of the original picture can be set to the linear relation.
