NEW MATERIAL:An anthraquinone compound of formula I, wherein R<1-6> are each H, halogen, OH or [(alkoxy)alkyl-substituted]amino; R<7> is (cyclo)alkyl, alkoxy, halogen or dialkylamino-substituted phenyl, biphenyl or naphthyl and R<8> is alkyl or halogen and X is O, S or imino. EXAMPLE:A compound of formula II. USE:The title compound which has excellent solubility in an organic polymer and high dichroism and can give a clear-blue polarizing film of an excellent polarizing property, heat resistance, moisture resistance, weathering resistance and transparency. PREPARATION:An anthraquinone compound of formula III is reacted with a compound of formula IV at 50-200 deg.C in the absence of any solvent or in the presence of an alcoholic, aromatic, amide or the like solvent.
