PURPOSE:To improve recording and reproducing characteristic by providing an underlying layer consisting of a superconducting material between a substrate and magnetic recording layer. CONSTITUTION:The underlying layer 12 consisting of the superconducting material is formed on the nonmagnetic substrate and the magnetic recording layer 13 is formed thereon. Namely, the superconducting material is a complete diamagnetic material to forbid entry of a magnetic flux into the superconducting material and, therefore, if the underlying layer 12 consisting of the superconducting material is provided, the quantity of the magnetic flux on the medium surface is larger than the case in which the superconducting material is not provided as the underlying layer. The recording magnetic field cannot enter the superconducting material even at the time of writing with the magnetic recording medium having such structure and, therefore, the magnetic field concentrates in the magnetic recording layer and increase accordingly. The writing even with the medium having the higher coercive force is thus enabled. The recording efficiency of the magnetic recording layer is thereby improved and the reproduction output is increased.
