PURPOSE:To obtain the title emulsion having a high surface tension and being suited as a binder for water-repellent nonwoven fabrics, and for improving the touch by hard finishing, or the like, by dispersing specified polymer microparticles in water. CONSTITUTION:At least 50wt.%, preferably, at least 80wt.% monomer (a) selected from among an aromatic vinyl monomer (e.g., styrene), an alkyl methacrylate (e.g., methyl methacrylate) and acrylonitrile is polymerized with, optionally, another monomer (b) to obtain polymer microparticles of a glass transition temperature >=30 deg.C, preferably, >=50 deg.C, and an average particle diameter <=1mu, preferably, <=500mum. Component A is dispersed in water (B) to obtain the title emulsion of a surface tension >=55dyn/cm, preferably, 60dyn/cm.
