PURPOSE:To eliminate the indeterminacy on a position of a deformed pattern by mapping an image on a partial space in which a wave function group of a standardized barmonic oscillator is extended, and thereafter, calculating a distance between a standard pattern image and an input image in this partial space. CONSTITUTION:First of all, by an input image developing means 1080, a partial area group for constituting an input image stored in an input image storage means 1090 is developed by using a wave function group of a harmonic oscilla tor as a base, and at every partial area which has been calculated, a develop ment coefficient is stored in an input image description storage means 1070. Subsequently, by a distance image synthesizing means 1030, a distance of every partial area is calculated from a description of a standard pattern stored in a standard pattern description storage means 1020 and the development coeffi cient of every partial area stored in said storage means 1070. Thereafter, by a position detecting means 1050, the position of the partial area for showing the same pattern as the description of said standard pattern in the partial area for constituting the input image is detected, based on said distance, and dis played on a display means 1060.
