PURPOSE:To automatically detect fine waviness on the machine surface of a workpiece during machining, by a method wherein a vibration sensor is secure to a tool post, and a converter to convert acceleration of vibration detected by the vibration sensor into a voltage and a comparator to compare the output voltage of the converter with an arbitrary set value are provided. CONSTITUTION:During a tuning work, the magnitude of the initial speed of vibration of a tool 3 and a tool post 4, generated during machining, is differed due to a change in impurity in a workpiece 2, a defect in crystal, tool wear, or pitching, or resistance during convey-out of chips. As acceleration of the vibration is decreased, fine waviness on a machine surface is decreased, and an excellent surface is formed. Thus, by mounting a vibration sensor 5 on a tool post 4 of a precision lathe 1, vibration during machining is detected, a vibration output is converted into acceleration by means of a converter 6, and the magnitude of acceleration is outputted as the intensity of a voltage. By comparing the output voltage with a set value by means of a comparator 7, it is evaluated whether fine waviness on the surface of the workpiece 2 is allowable.
