PURPOSE:To obtain the title copolymer excellent in transparency, hot-creeping resistance, etc., by reacting a 2,6-dihalogenobenzonitrile with an alkali metal salt of a biphenol and an alkali metal salt of a dihydric phenol in the presence of a solvent. CONSTITUTION:A 2,6-dihalogenobenzonitrile of formula I (wherein X is a halogen) is reacted with an alkali metal salt of a biphenol of formula II (wherein M is an alkali metal) and an alkali metal salt of dihydric phenol (e.g., p- hydroquinone) of formula III (wherein Ar is formula IV or V) in the presence of a solvent. The reaction product is treated with water of an alcohol. In this way, a polycyanoaryl ether copolymer having k repeating units of formula VI and l repeating units of formula VII, having a k/(k+l) value of 0.25-0.75 and a reduced viscosity >=0.4dl/g in a 0.5g/dl solution in a p-chlorophenol solvent at 60 deg.C can be obtained.
