PURPOSE:To efficiently test abrasion resistance and heat resistance under the same condition as that at the time of actual use, by variably applying load to a test roll to rotate said roll at a variable peripheral speed and heating said test roll while making a heating position variable. CONSTITUTION:Test rolls 100, 101 are mounted in parallel on the support shafts 20-23 rotatably mounted on an upper base table 10. A load applying mechanism 50 consisting of a pair of ball screw jacks 51 and a reversibly rotatable drive motor applies variable load to the rolls 100, 101. A rotary drive mechanism 60 consisting of a drive motor 61 and a speed reducer 63 allows the rolls 100, 101 to rotate at a variable peripheral speed. The gas burner provided in a furnace body 30 heats the rolls 100, 101 so that the heating positions thereof become variable. Further, the rolls 100, 101 have cooling water passages formed to the axes thereof and cooling water is supplied to said passages through the axes of the support shafts 20-23 thereof in the same way as that at the time of actual use to cool the rolls 100, 101. By this method, the condition equal to or severer than that at the time of actual use is set to make it possible to test the durability of the test rolls.
