PURPOSE:To obtain ultrashort carbon fibers having small carbon fiber length, by solidifying carbon fibers by the use of freezing of a binder, further cutting the fibers into a block state, compressing through a mold and grinding. CONSTITUTION:A carbon yarn bundled material such as tow or strand arranged in one direction is laminated while sprinkling preferably water as a binder, the binder is frozen with liquid nitrogen and the bundled material is temporarily solidified. Then the bundled material is cut into a proper length by a guillotine cutter, made into a block state and packed into a mold for pressing machine. Further the blocked bundled material packed in the mold is compressed at given load and ground. Then the binder of ground fibers is removed by a dryer, etc., so that carbon yarn is made into ultrashort carbon fibers having <=1mm fiber length.
