A piston ring for use with an internal combustion engine has internal and external peripheral surfaces with one edge being cutaway eg at 12 to affect a torsional twist in the piston ring. The ring 11 may be a component in a compound which embodies two rails 2, an expander 5, and the intermediary twist ring 11 located between the two rails. The ring preferably has tapered or napier type peripheral surfaces, with slots at upper and/or bottom side faces which serve in an engine to drain oil towards the crankcase. <IMAGE>
