PURPOSE:To allow an optical mark reader to read an optical mark read (OMR) sheet which is so constituted as to be marked in a vertical direction with respect to a read direction by providing a circuit for converting numerical value and a circuit for converting the number of digits. CONSTITUTION:In the OMR device 1 reading mark information which has been marked in the same direction as the read direction, converting it into a numeral and outputting it, the OMR sheet 1a which is so constituted as to be marked in the vertical direction with respect to the read direction is generated. The sheet 1a is allowed to read by the device 1 and the circuit for converting numerical value 21 and the circuit for converting the number of digits 22 execute converting processing at every reading serial order (x) from the high-order column of mark information when read data (y) in respective columns are outputted. Namely, the circuit 21 converts the serial number (x) into the numerical value in the vertical direction on the sheet 1a, and the circuit 22 converts data (y) into the numerical value showing the number of digits in the lateral direction on the sheet 1a. Thus, the device 1 is caused to read the sheet which is so constituted as to be marked in the horizontal direction with respect to the read direction, and mark information is converted into the numeral so as to be outputted.
