PURPOSE:To reduce color slurring of each color in the width direction of transfer paper with a simple constitution, by detecting the position of a pattern picture for measurement and calculating the shifting quantity of a picture in the width direction in accordance with the signal. CONSTITUTION:Means 41 and 47 for generating picture signal for pattern which form pattern pictures for measurement on a transfer belt 21, a detecting means 27 for detecting positions of pattern pictures for measurement, an arithmetic means for calculating shifting quantities of pictures in the width direction in accordance with the signal of the detecting means 27, and a signal generating means which corrects at least one of main scan writing timing clocks and writing clocks in accordance with signals from the arithmetic means, are provided. Therefore, color slurring can be measured and compensated accurately without receiving any influences from the contamination of the transfer belt 21 and contamination and fluctuation of sensitivity of a sensor. Thus color slurring of each color in the width direction of transfer paper can be reduced with a simple constitution.
