The invention relates to a process for the preparation of substituted cyclobutanecarbaldehydes of the formula (I) <IMAGE> in which R<1> stands for alkyl or aryl, by reaction of <IMAGE> in which Hal stands for Cl, F or Br, with tin hydride of the formula (III> R<2>3-nSnHn+1 (III> where n = 0 or 1 and R<2> is as indicated above, and their use for the synthesis of prostaglandin derivatives.
