PURPOSE:To obtain consecutive picture data with fidelity independently of processing speed and intermission by controlling the read timing of a photoelectric conversion element to read an original by an output signal from a moving read section or a position sensor arranged near the original. CONSTITUTION:When a picture data transfer signal is sent to a control circuit 23 via an I/F circuit 22 from a host computer 21, at first a command is given to a subscanning drive circuit 24 and a pulse motor 1 is driven by one step. In this case, when no signal is sensed from the position sensor 31 comprising a photo sensor 11, the pulse motor 1 drives the succeeding step. When the rotation by one dot pitch is sensed from the position sensor 31, the picture data stored in the line sensor 26 is transferred to the computer 21 via the path 27 and the I/F circuit 22 by the signal.
