A method and an apparatus for forming stacks or bundles from steel bars is presented, any desired steel sections being able to be both stacked and collected with a high throughput capacity. According to the invention, the steel bars are stacked in layers, or steel bars which cannot be stacked are collected on the stacking table (14). Two turning-magnet groups (1, 6), which are in operative connection, are arranged one behind the other, the second turning-magnet group (6) being rotatable into the laying-down region of the stacking table (14). When the layers are rotated through 180@, the drives (3, 4; 8, 9) of the turning devices (1, 6) are swivelled through an angle smaller than 180@, preferably through 125@. The mountings (5a, 10a; 5b, 10b) of the drives constructed as swivelling levers (3, 8) and connecting arms (4, 9) are arranged below the upper edge of the chain (11). During collecting of steel bars which cannot be stacked, the turning devices (1, 6) remain in the resting position (A, B'). <IMAGE>
