PURPOSE:To prevent wasteful consumption of printing ribbon by providing a release command means which stops the operation of a ribbon feed means. CONSTITUTION:A ribbon takeup device which rotates and drives a takeup shift spool 22 uses a mechanism which converts the linear movement of a carriage 8 to the rotational movement of the takeup side spool 22 by means of a rack and pinion. While a thermal head 6 stays at a printing position, the pinion is placed in a position to allow itself to be engaged with the rack. However, when the thermal head 6 is released from a printing position, the pinion also retreats to a non-working position, rendering its engagement with the rack impossible. Consequently, the ribbon is taken up only when the thermal head 6 moves with the carriage 8 with the thermal head 6 pressed against a printing position. When the thermal head 6 is set to a released condition, winding of the ribbon does not occur regardless of the movement of the carriage 8.
