PURPOSE:To enable generation of a character symbol pattern with various shadows by providing an output means which outputs data overlapped to a position which is shifted prearranged dots from a pattern generated by a pattern generation means. CONSTITUTION:When a code corresponding to a character A is received from a data source 2 and is printed out, CPU 3 first reads an ordinary character pattern of A from a character font ROM 6 according to data within a character font area 7b, and develops the ordinary character pattern in a black image buffer memory 8. Next, the CPU 3 reads an italic character pattern (becomes a shadow part) from the character font ROM 6 in conformity with data in a shadow character font area 7c and stores the pattern in a red image buffer memory 9. At that time, however, a few dots each (one dot each in the embodiment) are developed, shifted to (-) position, in a horizontal and a downward (x, y) direction from a position where the ordinary character pattern is stored in the black image buffer memory 8.
