In order to regenerate soot-coated surfaces and filters of ceramic or mineral materials or coatings, the soot is used as inhomogeneous electrical conductor with the passage of a high voltage current. The electrical discharges which this produces between the individual soot particles results in the latter being burnt off. The high voltage is applied to two or more electrodes which are situated in or on the surface or the filter. The geometry, number and arrangement of the high-voltage electrodes are designed specific to the application depending on concentration, layer thickness and depth of penetration of the soot and on the surface properties of the filter body or surface.
