Lining is produced on the inner surface of the extrusion channel and, where required, on the outer surfaces of a screw in an extrusion screw press for thermoplastics from a homogeneous isotropic powder metallurgical material, which is isostatically compressed to form a compact coating of the theoretical density of the material. The coating is joined to the channel wall or the screw surfaces by diffusion welding, using the hot isostatic pressing technique. The coating can be applied to unhardened, machined surfaces and compaction and welding can be carried out simultaneously.
