The reciprocating piston internal combustion engine has an engine block (1) comprising cylinders (2), cylinder heads, pistons (3) connecting rods (4), crankshaft (5) and their main bearings (6), which engine block with the aid of structure-borne noise insulating support elements is inserted oil-tight in an outer sump (7). The engine block (1) is held in the outer sump (7) at both its ends by means of the structure-borne noise insulating support elements, which are arranged coaxially with the crankshaft (5) and is sealed on the upper edge of the outer sump (7) solely by an oil seal (8). In the area of the said oil seal (8), buffers (9) are arranged between engine block (1) and outer sump (7). In order to prevent disruptive resonance phenomena on the main bearings of the engine, even in the lower speed range of the internal combustion engine, the buffers (9) are held in permanent non-positive connection with the engine block (1) and the outer sump (7) and have a progressive characteristic. In addition the buffers (9) are arranged at points of high mechanical impedance of the outer sump (7). <IMAGE>
