A decubitus-preventing mat comprises a multitude of individual cells (1 to 7) which are provided with heating elements (10) for selectively converting a liquid (11) in the different cells (1 to 7) from the liquid into the gaseous state in order thus to generate a superatmospheric pressure in selected cells (1 to 7), so that the surface supporting the body of the patient can be temporally varied. Due to the electrical control of the heating process and the change in volume associated therewith the supply of gaseous or liquid media from the outside can be dispensed with, so that noise nuisance due to pumps or compressors can be avoided. Further advantages of the absence of pumps and compressors are less susceptibility to faults requiring repair and reduced maintenance costs, lighter weight, easier transportation and simpler handling. <IMAGE>
