Process for the quilting and cutting of upholstery parts and similar workpieces by means of an automatic device and a station I, in which the roll fabric (12) is received, drives and lifting-in devices being provided, in order to make the roll handling and unwinding easier, and a station II, consisting of a sewing head (11) which executes X-Y movements by coordinate control on a cross slide (22) preceding a feed unit which consists of a perforated or otherwise permeable conveyor-band material (16), within which is located a vacuum trough (14), by which the entering material web (12) is sucked by means of suction air against the conveyor band, where, with a correct coordination of the perforated cross-sections of the suction trough and conveyor band, during the forward and return movement the material web is taken up in a draft-free and slip-free manner by the conveyor bands located in front of or behind the sewing machine. <IMAGE>
