In order to make excavations impermeable to water, it is known to construct trench walls around the excavation in the earth. The trench walls remain in the earth after completion of the construction work. This leads to the disadvantage that groundwater flows are deflected and bring about a change in the earth. The groundwater also builds up in front of the trench walls, whereas it sinks behind it. In order to avoid this, a bag (10) impermeable to water is placed in the earth trench which is filled with the diaphragm-wall mass for forming the trench wall (7). The bag (10) is filled with a heavy liquid so that part of the trench is filled by the bag (10). After completion of the protection against water, the bag (10) is emptied and removed from the trench, whereby an opening results in the trench wall (7) which is filled with a material permeable to water. <IMAGE>
