The brake system has a brake master cylinder (1) with a first working chamber (4) and with a second working chamber (5) separated from the latter, the first brake line (15) leading from the first working chamber (4) via pressure-control valves (20,21) of an anti-lock control system to the brakes (15,17) assigned to the driving wheels of a vehicle. Brakes (26,27) assigned to non-driven vehicle wheels are connected to the second working chamber (5) via a second brake line (25) having pressure-control valves (28,29). For supplying pressure medium to the brake system, there is provided a pump (33) which, when the anti-lock control system is cut in, can be connected to the brake lines (15,25) via pressure lines (34,35). In order to make it possible to control wheel slip during starting, provision is made for the pressure-control valve (20-23) in the brake line (15) and the pump (33) to be switchable by means of an anti-lock control system, with the brake master cylinder (1) not actuated, and for the connection from the first working chamber (4) to the first brake line (15) and the pressure line (35) to be capable of being shut off respectively by means of a solenoid valve (14,37) when the anti-lock control system is cut in.
