<p>In a printer, a carrier (1) having a print head (2) mounted thereon is moved towards the platen (3), from a maximally retracted position, to a contact position at which a switch member (13) carried by the carrier contacts a surface of a printing sheet (14), and is then slightly retracted from the contact position to define a predetermined working gap between the print head and the printing sheet. The switch member for detecting the printing sheet may be mounted on a flat portion of an indicator (7) attached to the carrier. Thus the printer can be enabled to adapt itself automatically to printing sheets of different thicknesses.</p> |
