An engine braking system including an axial flow compressor (3) connected to an output shaft (5) of an engine (1) so as to be driven by said output shaft (5) and to discharge air or exhaust gas supplied thereto, so that the compression and discharging work by axial flow compressor (3) serves as a braking effort during engine braking.
