PURPOSE:To always reproduce a picture with high quality and high definition by detecting a highlight part of a picture from picture data and applying dot processing to the part detected as the high light part and binarizing the result. CONSTITUTION:An edge detection circuit is changed into a highlight port detection circuit 20, which detects it as the highlight part when the maximum value of the density of 9 picture elements (3 X 3 picture element) in the block is a prescribed threshold value. Then the highlight part is subjected topseudo dot processing to provide a regularity thereby arranging scattered dots in a short period. Thus, the regularity without noise is formed, the production of granular noise having been sensed in the highlight part is prevented. Thus, the pseudo contour is eliminated and the reproduced picture with fidelity to the original is attained.
