In the adsorption column (1), a plurality of packing elements (3 to 7) which are filled with a compressible chromatography carrier, are arranged on top of one another with a mutual offset of 90 DEG . These packing elements have a shape as described, for example, in Swiss Patent 537,208. This arrangement has the effect that the mixture of dissolved substances charged to the top of the adsorption column (1) is divided on its separation path into part streams which flow through the column (1) in zig-zag fashion.
