PURPOSE:To represent features of an image properly with a small number of gradations by measuring the distribution of the brightness of image data, dividing the distribution into (n) brightness sections so that the amounts of data are nearly equal, and displaying the image on a display device with (n) gradations so that data in the respective brightness sections are equal in brightness. CONSTITUTION:The brightness of the brightness of an image picked up by a TV camera 1 is measured and divided into the (n) brightness sections so that the amount of data are nearly equal; and then this image is displayed on the display device 5 with the (n) gradations so that the data in the respective brightness sections have the same brightness. Consequently, any image is represented with the (n) gradations and the features of almost all of images are represented properly with a small number of gradations.
