PURPOSE:To surely form cast billet to the desired shape by calculating deformed degree of the cast billet with the prescribed parameter after passing through bending part and setting mold shape based on the above calculation, so that the final shape of the cast billet substantially becomes right circle. CONSTITUTION:In the case of vertical bending type continuous casting, molten steel 12 in a tundish 11 is supplied in the mold 14 from a nozzle 13 and cooled by the mold 14 to make the cast billet 16. When the cast billet 16 passes through the bending part 2, the cross sectional shape is deformed under the prescribed deformed degree. As the parameter to the deformed degree of the cast billet 6, the equation of flatness ratio D, that is, D=(dA-dB)/d0 is used. In the equation, dA for the max. diameter and dB for the min. diameter of the cas billet 16 after passing through the bending part 2 are used. Based on the D value found by this method, the cross sectional shape of the mold 18 set, so as to become ellipse having major axis (d) and minor axis d0 in the shape before the cast billet 16 reaches to the bending part 2. By this method, the final cross sectional shape of the cast billet 16 can substantially becomes the right circle.
