PURPOSE:To improve traveling durability, oxidation stability and electromagnetic conversion characteristics of a magnetic tape by using specific ferromagnetic powder. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic layer of the magnetic tape contains a compd. which can be crosslinked or polymerized by irradiation of radiations (e.g. urethane (meth)acrylate) and the ferromagnetic powder (A). In addition, the magnetic layer is subjected to a radiation treatment by the radiations (e.g. electron beams). The powder A is metal or alloy powder essentially consisting of iron having <=300Angstrom crystallite size and the atomic ratio of oxygen to the iron on the powder surface is specified to 1.6-3.0. This powder A is formed by dehydrating, for example, acicular alpha-FeOOH deposited with a desired metal in a reducing gas to form alpha-Fe2O3, then reducing the powder, immersing the reduced powder in an org. solvent, drying and gradually oxidizing the powder and further subjecting the same to a heating treatment in an oxygen-contg. gas.
